having a sort / clear out and found these, any info on approximate dating would be nice / appreciated. Chubb manual of safes and strongrooms, mentions 1968 isolator introduction and some 1973 brochures, so assume 1973 or close after.

That makes two of us Gary. Shows what an effective News Gathering Department Chubb had and what a bad memory I have. So I had a mole too?

I do remember how Chubb were sneered at for getting these from Japan. Beginning of the end I fear for ‘REAL’ safes. Insurers must take the blame.

Must have eviscerated itself out of shame.

Thanks anyway Gary. Reminds me that was when I was moved down from Fishers in Glasgow. If only I’d had the foresight to collect stuff as you have before then.

yes I saw that modern foreign market challenger, but that is much later than 1984,could be they just marketed it under a different name

not sure with that one as no date on the brochure that I can see. there is a nat west bank in Grimsby I think that has historical info on the walls about the first uk bank atms.

as far as I can see the Totfield house address was somewhere between 1960 and 1980

It was a Martins bank from 1966 to 69 I think when it became a Barclays branch and see to remember something on the wall near the fireplace mentioning the first uk atm machines.

The first cash point was apparently the one Chubb installed at Barclays, Enfield, North London in June 1967. (same year as stamped on Gary’s Chubb Drive In banking leaflet).

Always amazes me that, incredible advancement and technology for the time, and equally impressive that it took chubb less than 2 years to develop and manufacture from their initial light bulb moment in 1965!

There’s a good read with original Chubb leaflets covering both the pioneering cash point dispenser and their massive 33 inch Treasury 3 doors (with a cross sectional diagram showing the 2 foot thick TDR slab), in two articles from the Design Journal series 1965 - 1974.
It’s hosted by UCA (University for the Creative Arts over on their VADS uk site.
It’s under an article entitled; Geared for export- 3 case histories.
it’s been viewable online for years now so should be available for the foreseeable future, and it’s well worth a look. Think I might have shown the 33inch doors bit somewhere on here before though.

My association with ATMs goes back to my time in Glasgow when my little safe company was given the order for 50 security containers to be incorporated in the new ATMs being made by Burroughs, Speytec. for the Midland Bank (pre. HSBC).

These machines were interfacing with the Bank’s computer whereas the previous ATMs such as Chubb and De La Rue were stand/alone. NCR became the dominant supplier with Tann providing the hardware.

cheer Huw, I couldn’t remember the exact details from the Barclays pictures, I probably have the info somewhere as it would be unlike me not to take a picture of it, when I came across it, the Tann book auction ends sunday tea time and there is a bid on it, once It has sold I will see if I can put the pages of it up here.

The original machines which were made to conform to UL TL.15 had conventional horizontal bolts, usually round but some in flat plate form.

NCR and probably others had pressed for a change in specification to give them a few millimeters more internal elbow room and which allowed for the carcase to be made from a double strength high tensile steel of an ‘equivalent’ thickness - i.e. ½". Unfortunately the ‘bending moment’ was no different and the boltwork easily forced past. Colleagues and I conducted a series of tests, one in the presence of Midland Bank, in which with nothing more than steel wedges, a heavy hammer, and a 3ft long,pry-bar, we opened an ATM door in under 12 minutes.
Tann were encouraged to design a new model to meet UL291 level 2 and to which was succesfully granted the higher rating. Flooding and fishing were unsuccessfully employed.The design incorporates vertical sliding boltwork.

I retired at this time and have no further knowledge of the product.

You had me going there Cepasaccus but what shows in the second photograph and fitting your description is the mounting for a time lock and the so called ‘snubber bar’.

Thanks. I didn’t know there are (or were) time locks with vertical bars. (Assuming that time locks can not be turned to the side.)
