whilst clearing up today, there were some locks from problem solving Chubb engineers , which whilst not really collectable or original, are interesting from a safe engineers point of view, they obviously couldn’t get old kroma novums at one time so grafted in a 6k75 lock into a novum body and also an escutcheon and combination dial made into locking keyhole covers to give dual control.

Wow another great find Gary, you keep trawling them up ! Although they’re modern I’ve always loved those Kromer Lafetton shafts for the short keys- used to see a lot of them on the Tann RDVs. An underrated and often overlooked solution to eliminate long keys or fiddly detachable bits on very thick doors.t

Yes Huw, I rate them as well, solid and well engineered, is the protector lock still manufactured by Kromer? I don’t think of this lock as being particularly modern, but suppose it has had a long lifespan, wouldn’t like to have to cut a key for one!

Not sure tbh Gary, I’ve been out of the trade now for some time but recall supply being erratic and saw many converted over in the early 2000s. That might have been down to the difficulties of not being able to disassemble them properly for servicing and the high costs of replacement when available though, I don’t know for sure.
PS, it was your Lafetton in the photo I was referring to as modern, I’m not sure how far back the Kromer versions go but I think it was Garny that originally pioneered them.

Gary, just had a look at the LEBTIG website for Kromer, and yes they still make a Protector- but only in the EuroNovum , so euro footprint only. Makes sense I suppose, I expect the cylindrical and oddball variations were the first to get the chop.

Lebtig’s website is very badly managed. All the “news” are “olds” and not valid anymore. Their Russian sales representative which was new in 2006 seems to not exist now. The “Protector locks are again produced because of the high demand” is also not true anymore. The certification of the lock has expired. They still have the machines (probably the old Kromer ones) and capability to to produce them. So you might be able to get one from them if you are persistent, but be prepared to pay quite a bit more than for a normal high end key lock. The lock will then be identifiable as a Lebtig lock by the serial number beginning with an L and an certification sticker with the name and logo of Lebtig on it. All other imprints are still in Kromer’s name.

The big chromed locking lid with what looks like an Abloy, is that an early pattern Kaso escutcheon cover off a Gem series or perhaps one of their SRDs? I only ever saw examples on their big TRTL30×6 Gem safes in the 1980s which looked similar but bit more modern.

yes Huw, I think this one was off a Kaso atm, but I have seen them on the Gems before, very impressive for just a locking escutcheon.

The big Chatwood grille gate lock is a dual control lock, and I also found this Milner lock and boltwork unit that came off a Milners plate nightsafe.

The Milners might just solve a mystery for me Gary, we had some similar with brass pinion gears and matching rack bolts, but never knew who’d made them, likewise a set of similar pinions in bronze, same mesh on the teeth but gears only,no racks to match.
