I need help recognising these particular lock parts...

Hi there

I am wondering if anyone might be able to help me find out the correct names for these particular antique lock/ key parts from these photos? I refer to the numbers from the images below.

This sprung-loaded tumbler?
This circular skirting around the lock pin? Am I right in thinking that this skirting was to prevent lock picking?
The pierced gating in the lock bolt?
The key wards/ bits?

Both parts marked 1 are Levers

2 is the Ward

3 is the Gating (or Gate)

4 the cuts on the mortice key are also Wards, often referred to as Side Wards.

I’ll raise you a few more quickies,

5 the central pin that the pipe key pivots on is the Drill Pin

6 the elongated horizontal slot above the Gating is the Lanket

7 the flat tail section of the bolt is called the Lath (NOT Lathe)

8 the cut out in the bolt which engages the key bit is the Talon

Almost, you got 6 and 8 right but what you’ve pointed to at 7 is one of the Hooks.

The Lath of the bolt is the tail or bottom end where it’s thinned down around the Talon. So the Lath on that lock would probably be most of what’s south of number 6.

Ahh, ok I understand now!!

So the two hooks would engage with what I have always referred to as a link plate (not in the photo) in order to lock the box. However, is ‘link plate’ a correct term?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am very interested in learning all this.

Yes pretty sure link plate is right and not strike plate or staple for a box lock.

I’m probably wrong calling the bolt projections hooks thinking about it, the bolt slides or jumps on a box lock and doesn’t pivot in an arc so not a true hook as on a hook bolt lock, which does.

Your lock looks similar to a Barron’s in that the gatings and stumps (there’s another one for you) are reversed between the levers and bolt.
BTW, the angle along the top edge is the Salvage, and any wards with a 90 degree bend are Hook Wards, anyway that’s it I’m off now as it’s Saturday and it’s well past beer o’clock 🙁party):

The part vertical mounted part identified as a tumbler can’t be a tumbler. It has no gate to interact with. It looks like it acts on the bolt pushing it into the locked position. It also looks like it would retain the key if unlocked. Was this off a cash box of some kind?
