I don’t think it a fabrication. It looks European to me and could very well have come from southern Austria. Looking at the internal view, it appears to require two turns of the key to fully extend the bolt. The square hole is for a knob or handle. My guess is that it’s 19th century. Maybe some of our European members might want to weigh in on this matter.
