I have 2 Lumby plate safes in our collection of oldies, one from 1900, recently taken out of a Dentists surgery. Its got that sanitised aroma that can make or break you!!
The 2nd Lumby, was used for 110 years in a Registry office in Halifax, it has one of the most detailed plates ever seen. Must be as rare as rocking horse droppings!
Now, Halifax, West Yorkshire is the key to Lumby’s.

Having researched into E Lumby & Sons Safe maker, Halifax. I have dug up in the ‘Whites Directory of Halifax’ 1887, E Lumby, is listed as….. Wait for it….
Lumby Edwd, Son & Wood Wire Manufacturers. It appears that they started making plate safes during or just after. As regards when they vanished, i’m still searching old Trade Directories. Lumby safes also copied the Wrought Iron way of making safes. I’ve seen today an unplated dead ringer on e-bay, safe hinges, handle, position of lock, right down to the hand painted swirly touch on the hinges.
