We have several old time locks that we are interested in possibly selling, would you be able to help us put a value on them?

The first is a Yale & Towne 2 movement time lock with a bypass switch. This lock has a time value of 72 hours. The serial numbers on the time movements are T3389 & T3390. Inside the door of the lock is the serial number DN2-C-374. The case is in very good condiition and both movements are working. Also have winding key and case key.

The second is a Mosler two movement time lock with winding key, this has a 120 hour time value.

Next is a Mosler 4 movement 72 hour time lock with winding and case key.

The last is a Combination lock by Joseph L Hall Company. All pieces are stamped with the serial number 7065.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

The Halls is nicely decorated and has the less common head profile, but what makes these locks a lot more desirable is the spindle – does this lock have one?

Unfortunately, we do not have the spindle for this.

Brian, what’s so different on this spindle? Are the Hall spindles a different or oddball size?

Hi Mark. Yes, the Halls spindles are stepped and are more difficult to remove from the safe. So very often they are just left behind. Also they are not always interchangeable.

Brian I’ll go you one better and say the lock is spectacular, with or without the spindle. The Hall’s Premier was actually an amalgamation of a couple different locks Hall made in the early 1870’s in response to an embarassing confrontation with James Sargent. At least 4 sizes were made of the 5 wheel version. An extremely well made lock right up there with the best of Yale, Sargent and Diebold. Doug

Yes Doug, I would go with you on that. I don’t know the size of this example and that was to be my next question to Wayne1137. What value would you put on it with / without the spindle. It is a desirable item in a collection I agree but even more desirable if it can be operated.

It kills me when I see great antique locks sometime selling for around what they cost when new 100 or so years ago. Sure its better for the buyer but to me it amounts to an insult to the maker. At the same time ironically though you see great art selling for insanely high prices. Go figure. Anyway if it was my lock I wouldn’t consider anything less than several thousand US.

The price for anything is what you get for it and what you are willing to take for it. If it is the same then you are coming out very well in the deal. I think that Unit locks are worth the $500-1000 that some are asking. But they never sell at that price but very rarely and most of the time it is an artful lock.

The locks in this post are worth a good deal. But the number of collectors is very small for some of these types of locks. Time movements are neat but I don’t collect them and I know of very few that do. SO supply would be high while the demand is low for anything made in the last 100 years if I am correct. I am not saying I am about this…. in fact I would love to be wrong. Safe locks there are more collectors for those than the time movements. I collect key safe locks…. kinda got started when I found some really neat ones.😃:
