The mortise cylinder patent was reissued in 1878 to Linus Yale Jr., (Deceased). Given that the life of the patent was 17 years it is just not possible that the lock could have been manufactured by Sargent in 1883. Regrettably I am not near my normal reference material, but I believe exit devices weren’t invented until shortly after the famous fire in NYC in the original skyscraper, the Flat Iron building which was at the beginning of the 1900’s. It actually should be possible to check with Sargent.
In the early 1970’s I had need for a part for a Sargent exit device that had been made in the 1940’s and while the device was no longer made, they did have the part I needed. They were one of the few manufacturers that seemed to have any interest in their past. Their current corporate ownership may have changed that attitude, but it is worth a try.
