Can somebody explain vault ratings? I assume that fire resistance and burglar resistance are rated separately, and that vault construction is rated separately from vault door construction. I’m aware that doors are often rated “Class 1”, “Class 2”, and “Class 3” and I assume these relate to assault and not fire.
What brings this question up is my research into the Swiss Vaults safe-deposit robbery in Denver, 1982. One newspaper article states “…Seely told buyers his vault would have an R-9 rating, as high as any safe in the state.” But I haven’t found anything about vault ratings such as R-9 and I wonder if the newspaper just got it wrong, or if designations have changed since 1982.
