Chubb GPO #6

Does anyone know the use or production period for the Chubb GPO 6 lock? I’ve attached two pictures of the front and back. I understand that these locks were not keyed alike. Thank you!

It would appear to be a version of the Hockey Puck padlock that fits over the hasp eye and locks it without letting anyone being able to saw the bolt or the eye without allot of work. But now days with the advent of cordless power tools this is not the case anymore… you just have to make allot of noise and it will cost you a cutting disk or two. So it would be a general use padlock. I can’t answer the when part.

Yes, that is an accurate characterization. The USA and the Philippines had smaller locks with a similar concept for protecting the shackle. The Canada Post Office was essentially a “hockey puck” style. For these three, the targeted use was to secure mail pouches. However, mail bags in Great Britain did not have a hasp. They were tied with string around the neck and sealed with lead or wax. This lock is from Austrailia, so perhaps the Australian post office had a different approach. However, since they are not keyed alike, that seems to rule out use on pouches.

These padlocks were (as far as I am aware) used to secure the coinboxes of payphones. GPO being for ' General Post Office and as such it must predate the breakup of the GPO (1977 in the UK / 1975 in Australia)

It may be worth a very close examination of the lock as it was Chubbs practice for many years to stamp a serial number or date code on their locks. Serial numbers ceased in 1945 but date codes then took over. It’s usually a month & year, thus 180 being January 1980.

Thank you for the link to the other thread describing the features of these pay-phone coin-box locks. I suppose that concludes my inquiry. If anyone has questions about other postal locks or information about obsolete security devices used to secure mailbags by any worldwide postal administration, I’d enjoy the contact.
