Need Help To Identify This Old Lock

Hi,

Need help identifying this old lock.
It measures 5 ¼″ high x 4 ¼″ wide, it weighs almost 2 pounds and is made of iron. It has what appears to be a number 8 on the shackle. There are no other marks on the lock.

Any help to Identify this old lock would be appreciated.
I would like to know when, where, and by who it was made.

It looks spanish, or spanish influenced in the design.

The major problem with this type of ‘primitive’ design is that it could be very old, or it could have been made yesterday in South America using primitive tools and to an old design. It looks to be damaged / incomplete, there should be a pin, or guide in the keyhole that the key would have revolved upon. I assume you have no key ?

So, it maybe very old ie, 200 years +, then again it may not.
Who made it - absolutely no way of telling.

Thanks for the info, and pictures!
I was told it is most likely German and is from the 15 or 16th centuries.
I am still trying to confirm this assessment of it.

I do have a key, but it is not the right one. I can get it open with a little jiggling.

Maybe someone will be along that is very familiar with these type locks.

You may have the correct key but without the center post, as Oldlock said, you will not be able to operate the lock right without the post.
