I came across this lock, and was told it was old. I would like to know

At most it is no more than 100 years old. I would guess from the 1930-50s. Made in the USA and in the state of Conn. I can’t read the rest…. but if you can read that text on the back would be helpful as to who made it.

What you have is refered to as a “poormans story lock”. It’s a dragon lock made by the Slaymaker lock company, some where in the 30’s to early 50’s like Halflock said. Collector value isn’t very high as there are lots of them around. If you have the origional key and the lock works with good spring action, it would be worth at most $30, however the lock by itself is worth maybe $10 -$15 tops. Hope this info helps you out. Mark

The Dragon lock is a little different…..this is the Griffin. The Dragon has the word Dragon in raised letters accross the lock face. I don’t think there is much difference in the value. I only got about $10.00 for my Dragon lock and it was in exelent working condition. This Griffen looks very nice, I would say it could fetch a bit more than my Dargon.

Here are the other flavors of dragon/griffin locks out there from my collection. The lock in question is actually made by Eagle which I have shown in the last picture. Oldbiscuit is correct regarding the value of your example and also the timeframe when it was made. I just wanted to set the record straight about the maker.

Angusbuddy, I referenced Arnall’s book 6th edition page 138. #22 is an Eagle and # 27 which I think is a dead ringer for his is listed as a Slaymaker. I’ve got the Eagle but not the Slaymaker so I can’t swear to anything. That’s whats fun about collecting these old locks,there’s so many different companys and styles that you learn something new all the time. Mark

In my opinion, the Griffin lock made by Eagle is the best looking one of the bunch. I never cared for the Dragon made by Eagle…..that’s why I sold mine.
