hi, just wondering if you guys have any info on my safe.I purchased it from an old brewery in pennslyvania.Its a herring and farrel safe. The patent dates that are painted on the door read from 1864-1871.The door pins were removed to get the safe out of the vault it was in. And to stop it from accidentally being locked. Any historic info on this safe would be greatly appreciated manufacturer,locks,etc… thanks rich

Very nice indeed. The timelock alone is a gem. Do you have the locking bolts that where removed ? Any chance of some macro shots of the timelock with the door open and of the combination locks with the caps off ?

What a neat safe. We will definately need some more photos to accurately date the safe but what I can find from what you have is this. They combination locks look like Dexter locks but I cannot be sure without pictures of the locks with the back covers removed. Dexter locks began production in 1869 to sometime in the 1890’s. Herring and Farrel joined in the 1850’s and became Herring Hall Marvin in 1892 so your safe is older than 1892. So far it looks to be between the ages of 1869 to 1892. Next Sargent and Greenleaf first made the model 2 timelock like your safe has in 1874. Your Model 2 has removable dials and a nickel plated roller bolt plus 46 hour dials so is probably a Model 2 version 4. That timelock was made in 1876-1877. So yoursafe was probably made between 1876-1892 but the most likely dates are about 1876-1882. That is a really neat safe and I would definately like to see more pic’s of the inside of the timelock (do you have the key for the door)? Also pic’s of the inside configuration of the safe and the locks with the back covers removed. Do you also have the locking bolts (pins) that you removed? The timelock door has a #530 stamped into door. The timelock movement and rollerbolt also has the same number 530.

Are both the locks needed to open the door ? Or is it a case of dual locking for redundancy and either one will allow the safe to open ?

I would guess it is dual control from the design.
