osco I joined this forum hoping to find some answers about a safe I bought to restore. Any info would help. I haven’t seen many square cannonball safes. The clocks look kinda rough to me. I’m hoping they can be fixed at a reasonable price. Thanks
Doug MacQueen Back at cha, Osco. Square body cannonballs aren’t all that rare as they gave a larger interior space, something cannonballs don’t give much of. As you can see here yours is a Herring-Hall-Marvin with a T-361 Yale timelock. The other two pictures are of a Yale Y-361 timelock in an Ely Norris cannonball that was just shipped to Texas after being restored here in Ohio. Matt Lamborn did the very nice paint job, Doug Seybold the plating and I pretty much rebuilt the Yale timelock automatic. New glass, winding eyelets, new mainsprings, clean and lube the movements. Two out of the three movements had to be replaced due to severe rusting. I was told it had to be functional and with these automatic bolt motors it is an all or none proposition, meaning you can’t do a half a** job. PM me if your are interested in me doing the time lock restore. I could talk you through dis-assembly of the timelock via Skype. I will warn you that this type of work is not cheap, especially depending on the current condition of the timelock. But yours may be in much better condition than this last one I worked on and with very good close up photos, and prior testing of the timelock with the proper winding keys I should be able tell its condition.
