Description from undated ca. 1950s Yale & Towne catalog:
Safe deposit operation. Keys in two seperate five or six pin tumbler mechanisms required to operate. No. 13-½ or No. 12-½ keys. Changes practically unlimited. Masterkeyed and grand masterkeyed.
Note that 13-½ and 12-½ were the old nomenclature for 5-pin and 6-pin keys with .40″ plug respectively.

i think this lock is between 1934 (super pin tumbler ) and late 1940’s yale letter change to block type letters ?
still have not got it picked ,but soon i hope
anyone know if this is like the 937 inside on cams ? or they are probably indepentant seeing you need to turn both keys ?

bicentric door set,large yale (not bicentric) and several 935 and 937 bicentric padlocks

Nice set of Y&T Bicentric padlock. Always try to see if i can buy one but the price way to high to get it. As for picking the lock should pick the operating key-way and turn it. It rotates about 50 degrees. Then you pick the change or master key and turn it. It will free the shackle. One more thing as i notice that some of the padlock has been stamp. Keep this in mind as the company stamp the padlock and key so they will know which key to use to open these padlock. There only one place i know that was selling Bicentric padlock that it in Ohio. every once in while it was on eBay…Tim…

thank you,timothy, this lock has to be turned with both keys . i can feel the cam (gear) move onboth cylinders at same time and see both plugs barely move togather.
maybe get it picked someday,never give up

picked ,,,and opened few pic’s

purpie and black pins in top shackle dog have to be rotated togather with both keys to open lock
now to repin it and cut keys

FINISHED added chain and lock works good must use both keys to open and only 1 key can be removed at a time and one has to stay

the yale pl might be a old safe key ?

I think PL is the multiplex master key to fit L and P families of keyways which were introduced in 1934. The GLP group was a family of 27 different single key sections, much like the present day GST group. It was later discovered that the way they were made was in error and that the S and T families introduced ca. 1899 could also interchange by key section.*

Hi Pete, just misinterpreted a little. Yale does have a L family of keyways and they are associated with the G and P families. There actually is a LP section that will operate all of the two families, but that key is never represented as PL. PL is a single keyway/section with a few specific use designations. The image is a picture of some documentation I have on it. Sorry for the poor quality, it was originally drawn on vellum in 1935. I don’t know why it rotates when you click the thumbnail either.

Billy, here’s an image of a seemingly different Yale PL blank from my collection, see thumbnail attached. Definitely appears to be a “double milled” multiplex master same as shown in Nathan’s earlier image! I likely got my two samples from a colleague on ClearStar Security Network?

Obviously a mismarked key. Note the stamping is misaligned and probably just mismarked after the second milling. I was in charge of the key milling department, key bitting and cylinder assembly and that just isn’t done. A customer reading that marking would get the wrong key or the whole thing would be rejected, someone got lazy.
