question about S&G time locks and dates they were available

I’ve been reading “American Genius” and would like to ask you all a question. It says on page 158 that by the end of 1886, 72 hr movements became the industry standard and that Sargent updated the Model 2 to 2-11. I’m not clear on whether it was updated and available that year or still in the process of being updated. If I were a banker looking for a time lock in 1887 and I wanted the most up to date lock available for my New York City bank vault, I’m guessing the 72 hr version of Model 2-11 is the most up to date, if available? I’m also a little confused on whether it’s the type that works on the combination lock or on the boltwork itself. If you guys have any advice or suggestions, I’d truly appreciate it.

The vast majority of S&G’s were designed to work on snubber bars on the boltwork and not act upon a combo lock.

if you look at the lower picture on my example :

You can see the drop arm is off guard and as such would allow a snubber bar to enter the case and as such the safe / vault to open.

I’ll take a picture with the lock on guard later.

I am new to this and have only just begun to browse American Genius, so I am not familiar with the term “snubber bar” just yet. Thank you for the photo, though. I kind of get a general idea of what you’re talking about. Thanks for letting me know about the lack of S&G time locks that worked on the combo locks. So now, if you have a vault door with a combination lock on the outside, you could have an S&G time lock inside that might work w/ the combo lock or might work with the bolt work, but either way, you cannot dial the combination and open the door until the time lock runs down? That’s right?

Yes, the timelock is the ultimate protection as no matter what (short of drilling the safe open etc) the safe cannot be opened whether the combination is known or not until the timelock releases.
