ltgbk Need to have shackle open to get the large brass pins out. Find a small punch to fit to the pin hole and slowly punch it out. After get both large pins out be careful or take the whole bottom part out…..Timothy…..
nathanbonstein this one is picked and open and pins removed. the keeper can be seen at an angle thru bottom hole . any way i move the cover the keeper is offset from the hole on both sides. the shackle is 9/16 and cover will not lift to push keeper out . the 840-850-830-870-covers will lift for keeper access-not this 872
ltgbk Not sure if this works. Try to put the shackle back in the hole with out locking it. Push it in and hoping should see the shackle retainer pin…..Timothy…..
nathanbonstein used shim to keep dog from locking ,i buffed another one but found no trace of any other holes or plugs. looks like drill and tap time ? thank you gentlemen for your help. at least the 877 went well.
Timothy Nathan Not really sure about this as I remember I has that same problem. I think what I did was went put the shackle back in the shackle hole. I pull the bottom plug house part out as far I could. Should see the shackle retainer and push that out. The other not sure if work if you can see cam and cam screw remove it need to pick the lock open leave open. After pick the lock turn the cylinder than pull the plug house out should see the shackle retainer. By the way love that Yale Bull Ring you have. Where did you get the Keil Yale key blank..??..Timothy…….
nathanbonstein the keil blank i might have got in arizona,been awhile. the yale /ilco blanks #1 and #1n were still available from ilco,there might have been a minimum on the order,been a few months ago. this 872 when closed the keeper is across from top of y and i marked it in the upper circle. with the body all the way up /at any angle / the keeper can be seen at the very edge of the lower pin hole. with the 9/16 shackle the body doesn’t give me any play to get the keeper out. boyh sides are the same,i can see the keepers edge ,no way to get it out

QUOTE] I don’t see how they put these together in the first place if the keeper for the shackle is inaccessbile–on the regular 870 padlocks I have when you remove the pins and pull the bottom out you can barely get the shackle retainer to show, then you drive it out from the side. There must be some trick to getting them apart, somehow they assembled them without enough clearance to reach the retainer. [unknown]
Timothy I’m not sure but after taken both retainer pins out try to pick the lock to open, hold it open and them see if plug housing come out. It sound like to me the shackle bolt may keep it from coming out…..Timothy…….
nathanbonstein regular 870 on left 872 on right . where circle is you can see keeper, they possibly forced keeper in at angle, but no way to remove. the keeper will go thru the hole,doesn’t make sense. i have 2 of them so i will drill and tap the open one and then hope it’s master keted and make key off the drilled one. Anyone keying a corbin like this one ? if you do not have a blank a 1a1a1 best blank fits very well. just some fyi
YALE7750 I just noticed that your lock has the old style plug retainer with the screw into the side and the long adjustment screw that limits plug rotation. I thought they switched to a pin that rides in a groove milled into the plug sometime in the 50’s or 60’s–I have a 850 made by Yale & Towne that has a pin which has to be drilled and pulled to rekey the lock. All the 870 locks I have are also Yale & Towne, but they have the same plug retainers as your 872. Since yours has a lowercase Yale logo, it is much more recent, at least the Eaton years or later. Are they still producing these today?

Maybe Pete or BBE would know,i’m just guessing. If you or anyone else knows where i could purchase 4-6 of the 870 plugs ,with the older screw retainer i am interested or trade i have new plugs with ge keyway for the screw retainer 850,840 yales. i think they both use the same plug ? As long as the keyway is not to restricted so i can get blanks for them.

You might find some on eBay, not too long ago a seller there had a bunch of them listed, not sure if they fit all the different 8xx locks though. [unknown]

nathanbonstein restricted keyway,so i milled down a different restricted key ,both grooves and narrowed the lip . all three keyed same bitting. headache, should not have to take another apart, unless there is a problem,like the first one. thank you,gentlemen,your help was appreciated

nathanbonstein thank you ,Pete, i even tryed 2 times on the gst and just wasn’t enough meat. they kinda came apart. i did make the driver up and it works. still have not figured out how they got these padlock 9/16 shackles in and with the same keeper as the 870’s.
