The circular part of the padlock that contains the trefoil design is an insert in the casting die that can be changed to allow a customer logo to be inserted in place of the trefoil. In 1929 the use of the trefoil was discontinued and the back side was changed to match the front unless it was a customer logo. While employed as the Key Records Manager at Yale I researched in vain trying to find a record of all the customer logos but did discover the discontinue date for the trefoil logo.
I wondered why it was discontinued and one engineer made the guess that it was because of the stock market crash that year. It would have been cheaper to produce the inserts for front and back with the same design. Those inserts do need to be replaced periodically so the year and need for economy because of the crash conspired to change, or in this case eliminate, the trefoil logo.
