Made by hand much the same as in the 1600-1700’s. This one of the smallest padlocks Kevin has made, and after watching him work for a couple days on a small ball padlock, a great deal of handwork goes into making a lock like this. Even the key stem and bit, often called a drilled key, is actually made of thin sheet, rolled and soldered. The shackle is made of “Damascus” steel, a re- vitalized blacksmithing process popular with blacksmiths since the 1970’s, most commonly seen in knifemaking. Doug
