Need help identifying Chubb detector padlock

Hello fellow lock enthusiasts!

I recently came upon a Chubb Detector Padlock (with original key) and am wondering if anyone could provide any information on it. I’m interested in dating it… …and I would also be interested to know an estimate as to the value of the lock…although I will not definably not be selling it anytime soon..(sorry anyone who’s interested!!)

I have this basic information:

Height : 59 mm

Maximum width : 39 mm

Thickness of body : 15.5 mm

Overall thickness :24 mm

Weight 159 g

Slight rusting on key and shank of padlock.

As the lock has no serial number and is marked “ Makers to the King ” it must be from the reign of George the Sixth ..

As to value, there have been a few very similar sold recently on ebay which made very strong prices for locks of that vintage IMO.

Wow thanks so much for the information! So based on what you’ve given me, this lock could be anywhere from 73 to 99 years old. This is certainly a very nice piece indeed. Is there any way to clean the lock without ruining the original metal etc; at least to bring out the engravings more and make it more shiny?

Also, I wonder why there’s no serial number on the lock?

Sorry, finger fumble when I did the reply. I meant Geo Sixth, not Fifth. Chubb stopped numbering their locks after the second world war. So your lock must date from 1945 to 1952.

I would not clean the lock personally. The patina is valued by collectors, a bright shiny lock where is should show signs of age could mean it has been taken apart and repaired etc and then re-polished to conceal the traces ……

Ahh so because Chubb stopped numbering the locks after World War II, and we know it was during the reign of a male monarch…it must have been George VI as he was the only British King after WWII…GOT IT!!

Hey, don’t worry about the mix-up, I’m just glad I know some of the locks’ history. Yeah I guess I won’t clean the lock then. I like it how it is anyways.
