This may be a bit of a stretch, but the symbols remind me of the English Hallmarks that were required to be placed on silversmith wares. While other guilds were not required to do this, some did it on their own. A stylized crown was the mark for town / city of Sheffield. Individual letters were assigned for the date, with the letters being used for more than one date, the style of the letter made the difference.
