Hello, I found this padlock while metal detecting at my parents’ property in central Indiana. This was found about 10 feet from the foundation of the original part of the home; guessing the home was built around 1870-1890.
Can anyone provide any insight into the potential history, age, and maker of this padlock, or other details? I like to tell as much of a story around the items I find on the family properties, and would be nice to put a little context behind this piece.
The only markings visible are on the keyhole cover, on which two X are stamped, with a horizontal line stamped below each X (the lower line is barely visible under the corrosion). It appears that someone took a chisel or other flat blade tool, and hammered the hash-marks into the metal to make this design. There are no discernible markings on the back of the padlock.
Thanks for your time!
