Padlock with no identifying marks

I found this padlock metal detecting a while back. I can’t find any kind of name, number, or anything else on it. Was wondering how I could go about researching it. I think my location probably helps some, I’m in Huntsville, Alabama. This was found in a field that may have been an old church or barn, can’t really tell.

Thanks, looking through these forums has been really cool to me. Didn’t realize how many people are into old locks.

If you are cleaning it up, go slowly. There may be some letters on the shackle (hoop) that are nearly gone, but if you can find any thing at all?? other than that, many locks were close to what you have…
Use high magnification & see if there is anything……………..donie

More than likely it is a smokehouse lock. It could have been made in the last 200 years and this type of locks are made today. Without a mark it will be near impossible to date.
