PTPK Padlocks

Here is my latest fad. I started out collecting padlocks back when I was about 15 when an older gent gave me a Yale pin tumbler push key padlock. My collection has grown to many hundreds of padlocks since, but I still have a fondness in my heart for these Yales. recently I started collecting other brands of the same style. Hope you all enjoy the pics as much as I enjoy the locks. Mark

So there was a Best padlock that wasn’t made by Best Lock Co. or was made by another lock Co. for Best. Lancaster PA is not where Best Lock Co. has ever been as far as I know. Anyone know more about this lock?

Dean, The “Best” padlock is actually a Slaymaker made by S R Slaymaker Mfgr Lancaster PA. I’m not really sure of the time period it was made, but I’m thinking early 1900’s- to late 1920’s. Mark

Frank E. Best was a prolific inventor and his original padlock was US Patent No. 1,451,860 filed Feb. 14, 1922 and issued Apr. 17, 1923, thus I suspect the Slaymaker version pre-dates it, see link:

Picked up a few more to add to the collection.
The first one works, but has a modern key that was filed thin to fit. Someday I’ll cut a correct key on a flat blank.The last one is a push key, but a warded rather than a pin tumbler lock. I’m always looking for something different, Mark

Nice addition Mark! I have not seen one of those style with a warded key before. Does you’rs have the cam assisted lift for the shackle, or is it the more typical push the key and turn?

Nice goin’ Mark…I don’t have either of these, nor do I have the BEST/ model.. I’ll look thru mine within the next few days & post photos of a couple that I may have doubles of.
I think that I have 2 alloy case / iron shackle SLAYMAKER models.. I need to get them out & see if there are any differences. and a VERY small yale. The yale has a brass body & a VERY small shackle-a bic pen will not pass thru the shackle when locked.

I was wrong when I called it a push key, It is a cam assisted, key retaining, warded lock. Once unlocked the shackle pops up just enough to clear the shackle hole, but the shackle will only turn one direction and only 180 deg.. Unlike most warded padlocks which have the keyhole in the center, this lock has the keyhole directly below the shackle like a PTPK padlock. Mark

The collection keeps growing. I picked up a few more, the first is a Rich-Con which was the Richards and Conover Hardware Co. The next is a G,W&H which was the Geller, Ward & Hasner Hardware Co. Next is the Lakeside which was the brand name for locks sold through Montgomery Wards Co. And last is a Yale, but it is about ¼″ smaller all around than a normal PTPK Yale. Hope you all enjoy, Mark
