That lock is found in the Padlock Collector book 6th edition page 44 #23. There is no description given for the lock other than it says it uses a double bit key. Value back in 96 in good condition was listed at $35. What makes you think the lock is French? Are there any markings or words on the lock anywhere? These wrought iron padlocks are commonly called “smoke house” padlocks, as they were often used on tobacco drying sheds and on smoke houses used to smoke meat.
