Displaying padlocks on a wall

For several years I displayed padlocks on a wall using the 3M “Command” adhesive hooks. Recently I’ve had two failures of the strips to adhere to the wall, one resulted in a bent key. So I’m looking for other ways to hang padlocks on a wall (drywall with texture, latex paint).

Pegboard comes to mind but I was hoping for something more attractive without sinking dozens of holes into the wall.

Any alternate ideas?

Hey Wylk,
I had inherited several frames for canvas painting/pictures. In an effort to use some of them I cut 2 pieces of Masonite board to fit in the frame. I only had the ⅛″ board(that’s why I doubled up), but ¼″ would work nice. I also put a couple thin strips on the back to act as shims so the cup hooks I use don’t go into the wallboard. The boards are then attached to my wall with 2 screws through the front and into studs. The frame then slips over the boards and hangs without any attachment of its own. I will have the 2 screw holes to spackle if it needs to be moved. Peg board would work too, probably better! Be sure to make the standoff shims thick enough for the hook supports to angle in and out without scratching the wall board.
If I didn’t already have the frames…. I would do garage sales or thrift stores for those, something older would compliment the display better than ones I have. Bill

Bill that look cool. I make my own padlock case and yes it hanging on screw to wall because it heavy. Boy she yeller at me like crazy for doing it.

Wylk have to try to use differ adhesive hook as there are other new one came out. I don’t remember the name of company but just maybe that would work or maybe try to use two adhesive hook because of the weigh on the padlock….Timothy..

The picture shows something I have used a few times. I recommend a wall mount screw on the 16″ stud centers and the lathe screws staggered on 16″ centers as well if you use it. BBE.

Pegboard: I checked the web sites for the big hardware stores and some have white plastic pegboard which would look better than the traditional brown masonite boards. Others have galvanized-steel pegboard but it looks good for hanging tools, not locks.

I do like the shadow boxes for things like cutaway locks, to keep them from getting too dusty. With a cutaway, dust can impact functionality, aside from just looking dusty.
