I’m not a collector but recently aquired a trenton john chinaman lock from a relative.Can anyone provide information as to its worth? It has a key but it won’t unlock. it is in very good condition.Thank You.

It would be nice to add picture of the lock than can tell more of what would it cost. Only if the lock # 1785 could run up to about $4000.00. Go to this web site tell you little bit about it….Timothy…

Tim, it looks identical to the one on the website. But I only see a PATD 1878. Where do i find the lock number?

That would be hard to tell it can be just about anywhere on the lock or not…Also as trying to post picture on this forum somewhere they have information of how to post picture on this forum or maybe someone will show where or how…..Timothy….

You can resize a picture using MS Paint prety easily. Just open the picture in paint, select from the top menu Image, then Stretch/Scew and then change the size to 50% in two places, save as another name. You should be able to upload then.

Here are a couple pics of kellk108’s lock. I reduced the resolution and changed the brightness levels, no other changes were made to them. Nice looking lock!

There was a beautiful one of these listed in December on Ebay, awesome condition with key. It had been bid up to $1375 but failed to meet the reserve. The seller told me after the auction ended he had been offered $1500 for it, and he would let me know if he decides to re-list it. I haven’t heard back since. I found a couple references in “The Antique Lock Collector” publications section “Market Watch”: 2/25/12 $1313 and 8/31/12 for $499. Alas, there were no pics or mention of condition.

Just wanted to add that since my original post I have found the lock does open. (user error on my part) The shackle spring is not in tact so it doesnt pop open like I was expecting. But the lock does work. And the key is not the original I have found out.Just thought I’d share. Thanks.

Congrats on getting the lock to work. That’s a big addition on its value.
