Chubb padlock ?

Hello:

The height is almost 6 inches, The padlock about 2KG . No key.

The front/upper side of the lock,where the first word on top reads: “BY APPOINTMENT TO H.M.THE.KING”

Please tell us everything. We want to learn everything about it.

The padlock you are picturing there is an looks like an antique British Chubb lever lock to me. Our British collectors may know more about it than I do.

It’s certainly an impressive padlock!

Not one I recognise though- I wouldn’t rule out Chubb as it does look similar to some of theirs, but one thing I’ve found with most special application locks they made was they were usually marked with their name. They were of course one of the more well known makers by Royal Appointment, and made all types of locks including unique ones for Goverment/Military briefcases and even Gladstone (doctors) bags etc.

The padlock looks to be all brass from the pictures- shackle brass as well. This combined with the Arrow marks indicates probable military use- possibly for explosives, storage chests, magazines etc as the use of brass eliminates the risk of sparks. Or, it could be from Admiralty/Navy use- again brass being favoured for marine applications and it’s corrosion resistance.

I’m sure someone will recognise it and be able to identify it for you!

It is chubb and is the largest of the common size made until pre-1939

I am pretty sure now that it is Chubb!
The padlock is listed with detailed pictures in the “European Padlock” book that is written by Martina Pall. It is listed on page 206 and as I said before the key cover seems to be missing on yours my friend. Yours does also not have the Chubb engraving but it looks like 95% like it!

The lack of engraving is indicative of the fact that it is a late example.
