The 800 series padlocks from Yale have been a true iconic product for Yale since the 1890’s when first produced. I would guess that yours has a body that is 1 ½″ wide and therefore is a model 830. That design was so popular because of the removable pins that would allow the body to separate into two pieces so that it could be rekeyed in the field. There were three other models, 1 ¾″ = 840, 2″ = 850 and 2 ½ = 870. There may have also been an 860 at 2 ¼″ wide but it was not shown in my catalog #32.
Shortly after the initial production the dies were changed to allow the circular insert with the logo to be removable/replaceable. That allowed the production of locks with a company logo, of which Empire is obviously one. There was very likely a minimum quantity order requirement but it could have been for as few as 100 locks after the insert die was financed.
