Help with a very old, large "C. (or G.) Carr Rotherithe" Lock

Hi guys. New here and new to locks.

A friend of mine has had this lock for a long time. I know very little to nothing about locks but I was always intrigued by it. So I finally got him to sell it.

A friend of his had done some research but it was minimal so I would like to do my own.

The lock is about 5″ tall, 3.25″ wide and 1.25″ deep.

On the front it is marked “C. Carr ROTHERITHE”. I honestly don’t know if it is a “C” or a “G”.

The back appears to be marked “F.E.W 602”.

At this point that is all I really know. I was told it could be from the 17th century but I have my doubts.

I really appreciate any help!

I imagine locks this old with the key don’t come around too often…

Welcome aboard, I’ve never seen a lock such as yours, however it looks English to me. I did a quick Google search and discovered G Carr & sons was a company that repaired tugs and barges on the Thames river. Rotherithe was a company which had wharehouses close to G Carr. I suppose if a person where to do some more digging they might be able to see if the companys merged or were under the same ownership. It’s to bad you don’t have the key, being an English lock it is probable a pretty intricate cut style.Nice padlock none the less and a very good start to anyones collection. Thanks for that info! I could not find anything on either a G Carr or “Rotherithe”. And I was told this was English.

Is there any way to give this a general date based on the style?

Also, Rotherhithe (note the extra “h”) is an area of London on the south bank of the river.

Here is a picture of a brass plate -there is every chance that whoever stamped that padlock was illiterate.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the misspelling of that part of London.

Does anyone have any general information about this lock at least?
