Help Identifying Antique Padlock

My brother-in-law found an old antique padlock that came from a strongbox about 24 years ago. We are curious about the history of it and need help identifying the manufacturer. It has a lot of rust and wear because it was found out in the ground, but it does have some very faint marks that can be made out. Above the keyhole, there are the letters alian where the underscores are letters that we can’t read, but think that it may be galiant? I can’t find anything on that manufacturer and don’t really know anything about locks because we aren’t collectors. I’ve attached pictures of the front and back of the lock. Also, we think that this lock could have some historical significance, that’s why we are interested in knowing more about it. Thanks!

It’s name is actually “Valiant”, an iron lever lock made by Corbin Cabinet Lock Co., New Britain, CT. I do not know its production years but would estimate early 1900’s. As far as a history, I believe quite a few were produced and it was targeting a lower cost unit for household use.

Attached is a rather poor image of the Valiant padlock taken from a photocopy of the 1928 catalog of Corbin Cabinet Lock Co., thus your lock is presumably from that era. The successor company is still in business today, now known as CCL Security Products, a Division of The Eastern Co. and is located in Wheeling, IL.
