Can anyone tell me any information on this lock?

I found this lock at a flea market the seller swore up and down he brought it back from Germany. He was adment that the lock was very old. But i am not sure, anyone know any information on it?

I believe at some point someone painted the lock, not sure if it has always bin black but it may have bin painted. Also there is a strong odor coming off the lock, maybe copper? not sure if brass has a smell to it…

Is this a lock from germany, or some kind of cheap knock off?

Yes, this is a German padlock made by a company in Wetter called Burg. (Burg means fortress or castle in German.) Burg began making padlocks in 1920. I’m not sure when it was made, but it can’t be older than 1920. As for the black paint, this is probably a finish called japanning. It came from the factory that way. Hope this helps.
