My Yale & Towne padlock

Here’s another of mine.

Although it looks almost-like-new, I have a feeling that this one is quite old, as on the box it says ‘Yale & Towne mfg co’ and on the keys, it says Yale&Towne.

I know that later yale products had ‘Eaton Corporation’ on the keys, so this little puppy must surely be an old one! Never used though, looking like brand-new, with box included!!

This padlock is a small 830 type, so the keys are miniature, and would not be able to be matched-up with a Yale cylinder.

Again, I won this from an auction some years ago.

Nice find. New in box is hard to find in old locks. I have a few locks of different types new in the box. :8):

The Yale & Towne name was established in 1868 when Linus Yale and Henry Towne formed a partnership. In the 1890’s the company introduced the model 850 lock. The 830 followed soon after. In 1972 the company became a devision of the Eaton Corp.

So, your lock could have been made between those years and based upon the art deco styling of the box I would guess the 1930’s or 1940’s. Keeping it in the box is probably why the brass hasn’t gotten a darker color. Nice lock

Cool! I had an Idea that this would possibly be before the mid 1970s, but never guessed that it could go right back to the 1930s! My goodness. If it’s really from that far back, then this is probably the oldest (pad)-lock I have!

About your Padlock though it is old I am doubtful that it is pre WW11 as the packagng is late 1950’s to late 1960s style but I suppose that by todays standards its still old. But having it in mint condition is a real bonus too. you are very lucky to have it. The older package style was the darker green ( of the two) with a thin horizontal white lines running through it.
