New "Old English" Style Padlocks?!

Hi all!

I have found that there are a few mainstream companies that make my favorite “style” of padlock: The Old English.

Master Lock appears to have one that is no longer in production (but recent enough to be in a clear blister-pack with a red & black insert. It’s model 2750D,

Yale appears to have one very similar, model number 61570,

There’s a UK company called Squire that had a few different models.

I suppose my question is this: (1) Is there a simple way to get them in the states? Most of them appear to be in europe. (2) Why do these old-styled locks still seem to be commercially distributed in europe (England/UK) - are they used widely for a reason?

I think it’s historical, they have been made to a design for a long time, the design is still sound, people still buy & use them so why stop 🙂

Thank you for pointing me their way - they’re in the same state as myself! I must admit, I’m anxious for the Master Lock to arrive in the mail. If it didn’t appear to be discontinued, I’d probably apply the assault test to see what type of stress it could withstand. =-)

These locks are still widely available in the UK… If you enter “fire brigade padlocks” into your favourite search engine there are a lot of suppliers with stocks of about three different “keyed alike” types that are used a lot where you need to deter casual entry to bin sheds, traffic barriers, public parks etc. The emergency services here carry keys for these in their vehicles for easy access.

As for the assault test…. you will be disappointed, the majority of this type are very easily broken, the weak point being the bolt or the hook in the shackle which are both very weak. A stout screwdriver is usualy more than equal to the task!

Despite the above, they do look the part, and a nice collection can be made of various sizes and finishes. My favourite is made by Squire and is entirely brass, (including the key). I have never seen a stainless steel one but would not be surprised if they have been made.
