Seeking Gougler/Miller Combo Padlock Codes

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone out there has access to Gougler combo padlock codes??? I have a few new (new to me) Gouglers I am trying to crack and they are getting the better of me. I don’t expect this info to be published on this forum, so you can e-mail me (at mindhunter42 @ hotmail. com) if you have the codes I need. Here they are: F6217, 4202, and 547 If you are one who has a log of Miller/Gougler codes and you share them with me, I will share the ones that I have with you (through e-mail only). And just so everyone knows for sure that these are my personal locks that I am asking for codes for, I have included a few pics proving that they are mine: I included the Clarke combo lock in the pics because everyone here knows that I own this locks and it is unmistakable. I hope you can read the codes on the locks….they are printed in small nember stamp. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Mike DC/

Not sure what you mean by follow the thread. I’ve read all of the Q&As and was fascinated. If you need a pix of the lock, that will take some doing as I will have to
borrow digital camera to comply. Maybe I missed something. Thx,

The problem with such a request is validating that it’s from an owner trying to open his/her own lock, as opposed to a pest trying to access what is not his/her own. If you go to a real locksmith in person, you could hand over the lock; proof enough (not absolute proof, nothing is). But over the internet, what constitutes proof of ownership? A photograph gets a little closer than a simple “how do I open a 973 Gougler?”

Understood, Wylk and wise. From reading more and more about the subject, what you write makes sense (security, etc.). Because I don’t have a cell or digital camera, I will have to arrange for someone to assist me w/same. In the meantime, I’ve been investigating locksmiths nearby where I can physically take the lock; however, so many relate they’ve computerized and don’t have the Reed books or they are buried in boxes in one’s garage where access is difficult. A fun challenge.
An interesting mystery: my brother who still uses his Gougler (I didn’t know this) has the exact combo that I believed was mine. We’re attempting to wade through memories of how a 3-click combo stayed in my memory as being my combo–not his. The quest continues.

locksmith with Reed books and he said my combo wasn’t there. I hope you
can unravel the mystery and secure my combo. many thx - hope to hear soon

Ghostlighter, can you show a close up pic of the shackle number? Your locksmith may be correct in that the code isn’t listed. I’ve heard that Gougler made locks for companies and schools with different code stampings on them that would only be available to those entities,hence no modern day listings.However,I’ve run across one lock that didn’t have the code number stamped very deep on the shackle and at first look it appeared to be a two digit code,but on closer examination you could just make out the third number and the code was found. you a close up of the shackle but I’m positive it’s only the 2-digit 92. No
third digit.
I even used a metal polish to bring it up. It was my high school lock and the school
has since closed its doors. I wouldn’t know where to begin to track down those
files kept by the school. Most likely long gone.
Failing this, is there any “trick” to discovering the click combo or am I relegated
to the impossible task of process of elimination?

ghostlight, unfortunatly I’m afraid your probably out of luck. There are a lot of different combos ,3,4,5 digit ,RLR,RLRL,RLRLR and LRL,LRLR,LRLRL. Some start from zero,some start from dead stop left,or dead stop right. I’m thinking your brother has your lock(hence the reason you remember the combo) and you have his. I’de try to talk him out of it if it was me🙁giggle):. Good luck, Mark

To clarify: My lock was purchased as a freshman. My Brother left HS and gave me his lock
b/c the combo was fast/easy. After his college years he asked for it back. The lock I purchased as a freshman is the one I’ve been writing about. My Bro won’t part w/his for anything and still uses it to this day. I remembered [his] combo from using it for 3-yrs and several times a day.
Yes, I’m out of luck. The only thing I do remember is it’s not a “dead stop” type and it did
go from zero to the left. I assume you no longer need a pix of the shackle number since Gougler supplied these locks to out HS for years and, as u pointed out, are no longer accessible. Incredible.

Using a large magnifier i spotted what looks to be
a small zero on the opposite side shackle from the large # 92…
it could be a “nick”…careful magnification looks more like a 0

However, on the body of the lock and barely visible
from wear is a large 1529 .

ANY HELP THERE?

PS My bros lock as the 2-digit and 3-digit number on the shackle.
this one, sold from the same HS only has 92 and a possible 0,
go figure.

Ghostlight, Unfortunatly there is nothing listed for 1529. In 4 digit codes the last 3 numbers are either between 125 & 149 or 200 & 249 and there is nothing listed for 2 digit numbers. Wish I could have been of help, Mark🙁-:

I have searched for years to find a Gougler red dot combination lock, but no luck because I somehow remembered it as “Gouda”.

I’d love to find one, with or without the combination as just a keepsake from my days in the mid 60’s in middle school gym class.

I can’t find any on eBay, but will keep looking. Any other suggestions where to find one for sale?

Gougler is a brand name and Red Dot is just a trade name. That being said, there are many different Gougler Red Dot styles. Check this site and let us know which one you’re looking for.
Vintage Combination Locks

They do in fact show up on eBay from time to time. An easy way to catch one is to register a Saved Search with eBay and they will email you when one is listed. Red Dots were originally made by the J. B. Miller Keyless Lock Company; the company was purchased by Gougler and renamed around 1944/1945; Gougler’s lock division was then sold off in the 1970s and renamed Miller. Some of them, typically for schools or large corporations, have a key bypass for a master key, so that could be a detail to look for.

Thanks for the replies.

Any of the red dot ones on that site trigger the memory I’m looking for. And I set up eBay alerts in case one shows up. I even found an eBay sale of one that didn’t get any bids and sent an email to the seller asking if he planned on relisting it.

At a yard sale I bought two Gougler and two Miller combination locks. None of them have any stops. I sure would love to have the combinations!
Gougler locks have numbers 764 and 256 on the shanks.
Miller locks have the numbers 05253 and 05273 on the backs.
