Can you identify this English lever lock???

I was told that it is NOT a Chubb…..can anyone identify it (maker, age, etc.)???

It is a very heavy and nice lock!!! I LOVE it! =)

Hi there - no idea about your lock, but we have one very similar. I don’t expect they are by any known maker but I purchased mine a couple of years ago because I liked the design on the escutcheon and the house picture stamped into the lock body. Is your lock double plated on the front and back the same as mine? (See the side profile photo).

I have some cheaply made locks that are shaped like your’s but appear to not have as many levers. Here is a photo:

These two locks were made in Germany and both have 4 levers in them dispite the size difference. The escutcheon is different on these two…..I wonder if they were made by the same company as your’s??? Does your’s have any markings? These two, along with several others, were bought from a locksmith shop many years ago…..they were “new, old stock” that they wanted to clear out. Some were stamped made in Germany, some were not but I was told that they were all from the same company. Maybe the Chubb style round lock is German, not English like I thought???? Hmmmm, you might have raised more questions than answers! :lol:

Hi Mike - yeah, ours is only single plated :-(, but I have taken a closer picture of the stamp marked on the body of the lock for you. On feeling the surface there seems to be a slight indentation - so this was probably added after lock manufacture. The only other marking I can find is the word “foreign” stamped into the back of the shank. Thanks for sharing your excellent example - until now mine was the only escutcheon I’d seen with that design - nice to know there are more about. Catchya later - Sarah

OP - I would agree that it’s not English, the escutcheon is not right for an english padlock, so I would guess at German or maybe Dutch ?

Oldlock, thanks for your input too! I don’t know much about Dutch locks, Dutch handcuffs, yes, but not Dutch locks. This requires further investigation. :?:

If these are all (most) 4 lever locks, then why do they have more than 4 lever cuts on the bit of the key ?

It might have only 4 levers but there may be spacers and then there is also the driver for the foot on the key. So what appears to be 5-8 cuts maybe just 4 spaced out with someone making cuts to pass a spacer…. like a ward. Or at least this is what I was told.

Another option is that the keys are cut for a range of locks (some with more levers) and in the case of the 4 lever locks only part of the key is used with a spacer to save costs.
