Chubb padlock -- what do you think?

Hello,

I’ve just picked up my first Chubb padlock – please see pictures below. Got it off eBay – some of you probably saw it there. It turned out to be even nicer in person: has some real weight and quality feel to it. It came with “original keys and ring”, according to the seller. I could not make out Chubb name on keys, so I guess, jury is still out on that. It sais something like “bi-metal” on one of them.

What do you guys think, as far as condition/rarity/value? Any doubts about authenticity? I know I can find out production year by serial number, which is 1558694, but how exactly?

The lock is fine, the keys are’nt original though - probably just old duplicates.

S/n dates it to : 1906

I have a Chubb padlock which appears identical, with key (saying Chubb’s). The serial number is 335 768. Any chance of dating it? It is a thing of beauty. MK

Thats a nice lock. I have one similar except it dates just after WWII - so your lock dates much earlier - but mine has the original key.

I have bought a padlock like this now - but i have a problem: my padlock has NO SLIDING “KEYHOLE COVER” - / I dont know the name/.
Please, help me somebody !!! How could I buy this piece of the lock ???!!!

I don’t think you can buy just the cover even if they made the lock today. I wouldn’t think that this would be a lock they ever sold parts for. SO the only way you could get that part is from another lock. But then if you were to buy one with that part you would just have that lock that had it and the one you have now. I wouldn’t worry about finding a part. I would find another lock with that part for my collection.

Yes, you are right- but I think this big lock is not so common that I coud have the hope to find another,original one - but I am not an expert, sorry.
When you know possibility, please, inform me !!! I am not a real collector only interest nice,old,big ,curious padlocks……

The keyhole cover, called the ‘ escutcheon ’ is not a part you will be able to buy as Halflock advised. However you could certainly have one made by an engineer or similar.
