Here’s a picture from the OP. There’s no doubt it’s a very old unit, I would say prior to 1890. Plus the lock appears to throw the bolts directly in the manner of previous strongboxes. As such the lock is not going to be any of the common Milner’s patterns and as such may well be a Thomas Turner lock.
If anyone has any images of those locks I am sure they would be of interest.
