A quick peek at part Gordon Ramsay’s new restaurant situated in the old Midland Bank on King Street Manchester. Might have a wander in myself when I am there next and see what the role the vault is playing in all this.

There must be something about that building that lures chefs as from memory Jamie Oliver had a restaurant in there years ago and used the deposit vault as a private dining room.
It’s a relatively slim 2-step chatwood-milner from memory.

Funny you posted this, I was thinking of starting a thread on uk doors you can see as I’ve come across a few on my travels without even looking for them.
Although most are admittedly branch bank Chubb’s and Tann’s and nothing of massive central bank or BofE size.

Cheers wylk, the standard c-m you’ve pictured there might be on one of the other strong rooms on the site as from memory the one on the deposit vault is the thicker door with the 2-stepped slab. Haven’t been there in person though so can’t confirm 100%.

Well documented stories tell of 1million pounds worth of jewellery and a gun were found when locked safe deposit boxes were forced open when Jamie Oliver took ownership of this bank. Google has the stories. This is shown as the vault door in one of them.

there looks to be some older doors at the rear of that website photo, and possibly an emergency door .

If you want some ‘biggies’ these might be appropriate if you don’t already have them.

First one - Bank - South Africa - next 3 Bank of England Cash Centres - last 3 The Jewel House, Tower of London.

Cash centers have a large staff and require powerful ventilation systems. The vestibules will be of a greater height than normal to accommodate heavy material handling equipment for Bullion. Double doors are to suit two-way visitor handling.

My dealings with the Tower Security Group and Police took me out of retirement briefly in 1990.

Cheers John, the coincidence here is uncanny- at pretty much the same time you’d have been posting that, I was actually up in the attic looking for Tann Bankers brochures for Gary’s recent request.

While trawling through crates of files and brochures I found a crumpled magazine cutting which upon aiming it straight at the bin, had that sixth sense feeling to uncrumple it and see what it was…

I notice that some doors say “John Tann” and later ones simply “Tann” so I was wondering when and why the change was made.

Also, the South Africa door incorporates an anchor (and a word below the name, which I can’t quite make out) in the builder’s plate, I was wondering about that as well.

Edw Tann two (safeman.org.uk) The word on the label is Reliance which was their first Patent by Edward Tann.

I think of the Anchor Reliance as being older units, with regards to Tann or John Tann badges and stickers on safes, I don’t think there was a changeover date, they regularly used both, sometimes even on the same safe,
the bullion had TANN on the outside and John Tann Bullion on the inside.
Tann seems more popular on more modern units and expensive metal plates a trims, but that ma just have been a cost thing.
The Tann European is relatively modern but still uses John Tann,rather than just Tann
