Here’s a style of boltwork that seems to have been uniquely used by Taylor (JJ Taylor, J&J Taylor, in Canada). The only notable difference is the use of a sort of “round rack” in their rack-and-pinion coupling of boltwork elements. First, here is the style that is seen much more commonly:
Note the flat racks on the bolts and on the vertical bar. This is also fairly common on round doors though there are other arrangements as well. The pinions (gears) simply couple the vertical motion to the horizontal bolts.
Taylor did this a little differently. Instead of flat racks they machined grooves into the bolt bars. This might have cut manufacturing costs but there’s the possibility of patent royalties as well (I don’t know).
I can’t recall seeing anything like this on other doors.
What ever became of Taylor? The last I can find is the formation of Mosler-Taylor (Brampton, Ontario) in 1958 and a mention of them in 1968 (https://www.bramptonguardian.com/community-story/8100648-throwback-thursday-first-bank-machine-debuted-in-brampton-in-1968-at-taylor-safes). They may have continued beyond Mosler’s demise in 2001.
