Just one picture from the index of a Tann E5 door of 1939, (T150), hope to put an index up on the MLA web site soon. Of interest to members here will be Chubb, Chatwood, Milner and Hobbs Hart micro fiche records which are in the process of being digitised. The HoL Archive is now the official source and have taken over from Gunnebo, so should be able to help with dating.

In the mean time what do members know about this interesting door…

I forgot to mention that the MLA Heritage Room Itinerary pdf is in the public side of the MLA site HERE so all can access. Another button will be added shortly to download the latest Archive index. Both files will be regularly updated; the Itinerary to reflect the fluid changes to the Heritage Room exhibits and the Archive Index as the work digitising progresses.

Another interesting Tann safe; this is the 750 design and is captioned on the back “original wooden model of the 750 design”. Not sure if its full size or a scale model that John (safeman) can lift with one hand!

Nothing intelligent to add, but a slightly unusual appearance suggests they might’ve been experimenting with different (New)configurations or that its a leftovers or “parts bin special”?

Sorry to nearly disappoint you Huw but you’ve struck my Achilles heel. I confess I have an apathy towards Strong Room Doors.

More ‘leftover’ capstan wheels. This was taken in the Old Ford Tann factory before the war. The picture from the Archive Index is unusual having the full clenching mechanism but not the crane hinge.

The Tannsteel E5 Doors were made in 1934 and 1935, eleven in all.

The other archive photograph of the Tann 750 with the swept door form was installed throughout the basement of De Beers in Charterhouse Street. Paint jobs suffering from passing trolleys of ‘goodies’,

These are the steel
versions Brian. Best for Tann safes too.

Confusion Huw. These are not E5’s, maybe Tannsteel F grade. From 1932 till 1962 they made 36 different designations of Tannsteel doors from A to D with sub-divisions. Even Brian’s E5 is listed under 1932 when only 2 were made.

No wonder I try to avoid anything to do with doors. Where’s the aspirins?

Thanks Huw and John for your insights. I know what you mean; indexing some of the Tann Bromides there seem to be an infinite number of variations. It seems that everything that was made had a serial number, doors, safes, shelving etc, One large manila envelope containing 17 Bromides but contained only two of doors, and they were watertight/gas-proof versions.

Interesting comment painted on the beam in the first picture: ‘Remember - Hong Kong’
