Kromer novum was a possibility for me, but just a guess, I think the hinges are deceptive as the safe apparently weighs 1100kgs, so probably not a fire safe.

The frame casting is interesting. The bottom is appreciably deeper than the sides and top. I have seen that in night safes, but not in anything else.

Gary, this is stretching it a bit but I remember the name (spelling could be wrong) from the 1950’s when the security chief of one of the Scottish Banks asked if I could compare a Danish Night Deposit safe with those then in use in this country and which were being blown open with great regularity. These were fairly basic Chubb Commerce, Tann Standard etc.
They had one sent over to our workshop and which I recollect as being more or less identical to the one illustrated though of a smaller size.

Like most other Nordic safes a plinth was incorporated. Also like other Nordic safes reinforced security concrete was in general use, doors and bodies. This is where Stratford took the idea in 1962 for the Stronghold, Sterling etc. when they had trading connections with Rosengrens.

Gary this reminded me of a Polschröder or Ostertag-Werke but I don’t think it’s either. Both made similar very heavy safes with those puny looking hinges and Ostertag sometimes fitted round handwheels too,, but the handle on that one is particularly distinctive as the spokes project slightly around the outside- not a common feature unless it’s a proper capstan type on which they of course project much further.

Other makers like Garny, Lips and Troussellot also made similar but again there’s clear differences there. Between the distinctive handwheel, hinges and even the door pull is quite unusual someone like Oliver I bet would have a good idea but shame he’s hardly ever on here.

Some of the earlier Polish Kasy pancernas are also very similar construction, hinges and handle and also had a double bitted kromer-lookalike lock. More I think about it,, even SJ Arnheim made something similar with those puny hinges but think they always had distinctive brass ‘T’ handles.
