York Safe And Lock Co. Safe compartments

I have a large York Safe and Lock Company safe that was a company safe at my great grandfathers bussiness. It was built in 1926 and with this I received a key ring with keys that fit 3 drawers and 2 doors inside. There is a extra key with York Safe & Lock stamped on it along with numbers that fits nothing. Were there hidden compartments on these safes?

The numbers on the keys are likely to be similar. If this “odd one” has rather different numbers then it suggests that it is off a different safe. It may have been off a previous lock which has been replaced on the safe. Some safes had a key which was used to access the combination lock (have a look on the back of the door).

The numbers on the key match the numbers on the door lock that is inside the safe to get to the actual area where the contents are held. yet that key don’t fit that lock with those numbers a different key also with those numbers fit that lock.

often the same number will be for both locks but the left one will also say L while the right one will also say R.
If the numbers are not stamped in exactlt the same way then it could have been altered (after a lost key) and a new key cut to the new combination.
