Is this made by "Spartan"

Hello, I have just got the bug for collecting locks. My father is a locksmith and gave me quite a few locks like this one. He says it is made by “Spartan” (He thinks). The logo has an “S” with an “arrow” through the center of it pointing to the left. They have written on the back “Property of the board of education N.Y.C” and each one I have has a date stamped on the shackle ranging from 1945-1962. I am looking to sell these and just want to know what I am selling exactly.

The logo of an “ S ” with an arrow through it is the symbol of the Slaymaker Lock Co. These locks being from 1962 and made from stamped steel are really not highly collectable. However that being said, the fact that they are marked Board of Education NYC and have an operating brass barrell key does make them appealing to a select few collectors.Value I would guess to be $10 to $25 , but who knows now days with ebay. It’s a nice start to a collection. If I was you , I’de sell off the extras( keep the oldest and best shape one ) and use the cash to buy more locks of a different style . Welcome to the exciting and contagious world of padlock collecting. If your really interested in collecting padlocks,I’de recommend you purchase a copy of THE PADLOCK COLLECTOR by Frank Arnall(6th edition 1996 was the last edition) it is loaded with illustrations and prices for over 2800 padlocks as well as info on lock and hardware co’s. Mark- Thanks for the info. That’s exactly what I am doing. My oldest one is 1945 and seems to be in the best shape. I have already bought six or so locks this week (don’t tell the wife..lol). I find myself very interested in any Yale locks and old steel,tin,iron lever locks. Thanks again for the info.
