Milners' in Lithuania

I stumbled across a nice-looking old vault door in Lithuania:

A little more searching came up with two more images:

So it’s a Milners’ door (note the trailing apostrophe). Also notice the hefty door stop, a topic of previous discussion. This is in the city of Kaunas (http://www.pinigumuziejus.lt/en/the-open-door-day-in-the-buildings-of-the-bank-of-lithuania-in-kaunas/bfl_8585-2) at the local Bank of Lithuania, constructed circa 1925-1928 (http://www.pinigumuziejus.lt/en/buildings-of-the-bank-of-lithuania-in-kaunas).

Very nice indeed and certainly the first Milners door of any great size I’ve ever seen.

I note the keylocks ! certainly a rarity on any crane hinge door I would think.

What a beautiful door, that’s bordering on perfection for me!

I’m a big fan of ‘black and brass’ and have used it to great advantage on many projects over the years- a rare combination that, when balanced just right can tastefully combine the opposing appearance of an ornate and decorated look with one of stark industrial.

Love the long trim plate for the escutcheons, and the unusual faceted finials on the hinges- don’t see that often on any doors.

There is actually a similarish door in a central bank here in Wales, not as fancy as that one but a similar size. The largest Milners door I’d seen by a long shot. Had all been painted over on the front from what I remember and had open spoked capstan hand wheels instead, but overall similar and still impressive to look at.

That Lithuanian door is off the scale though…

Their web site (second link) states the door weighs 3 tonnes which doesn’t seem like very much even for the late 1920s.

Well I never…a catalogue for this door would just about be the last thing I would expect anyone to have. I’m amazed, totally amazed. Patent, you sure done it again, thanks so much for posting those.

PS- fwiw, I did a quick calculation based on the 138 Cwts weight stated for the non gated version. Working on our old British 112 lbs per cwt as opposed to the USA’s round 100, it works out at 6.9 long tons. I.e 2240 lbs per ton, I haven’t worked it out for short tons but I notice below the illustration it says “weighs over 8 tons”, so that’s possibly where the difference is.
