Chubb safe, would like to know more information

I’m hoping someone will be able to help me….we have just purchased a Chubb safe to restore and use in our new house (major renovations happening!!).

I’ve attached some photos of the safe in it’s current state and wondered if anyone would be able to help us and/or give us any advice on where to find some more information? We’d ideally like to know what date it was manufactured, who/where it was made for and what it weighs…it took some shifting!

It was made circa 1907 ish. Made in Wolverhampton.

The weight it stamped in the top edge of the door.

The scale being :

Hundredweights, Qtrs, Ibs.

As to more information if you contact Chubb safes they have the original factory records that could give me details. They used to make a charge to access those records.

The answer is correct on the weight but I think there is an error in the stamping. It probably should be 8 1 11
which would be

8 × 112 = 896
1 × 28 = 28
11

=935 lb = 425Kg which would be about right.

The safe is a beauty. I love those fish escutcheons.

You might not want to say but do you want higher security? If so anchor it down and fit an AED (there will not be one fitted as standard). Otherwise just use it as it is.

Sorry to disagree Chubby but I would say the number is 11. 1.18 with the ‘teeps’ for 11 having been stamped upside down. This would make it 1,278 lbs or 579 Kgs.

I only checked because having assumed the safe to be around 48″ high and most likely a ¼″ body then it should have been close to 12 cwts.

You should by now have most of the information you wanted regarding the age and weight of the safe.

For your further interest I attach a copy of a page from Chubb’s catalogue of 1915 which depicts a safe which appears to be close to the same size as you illustrated.

Your model would seem to be the Standard Quality.

When restoring I hope that you don’t overpaint the original finish but rather retain the marks of use which give it the character due it’s age.

This type of Chubb safe was a service mechanic’s nightmare as there are in the region of 60 countersunk screws retaining the lockcase.

Have’nt seen any as you describe. Very interesting concept though. Just as well, it was tedious enough with just plain screws - about ⅜″ dia. or thereabouts.
