Is this Sargent & Greenleaf lock complete?

Hi,

I am looking at purchasing what I believe is a Mosler and Bahmann safe. My main issue with the potential purchase is that for some reason, the seller took the lock apart, despite the fact that he already had the combination. He said he thinks he has all the pieces and sent me a couple of photos of what he has. Does this appear to be complete and will this be easy to put back together? This will be my first restoration and I am really excited about this safe, other than the lock.

Welcome Jason,
Yes, the part he removed is the roller bolt. It appears that he took it out so that the door could be closed, and that the boltwork could be engaged to hold the door shut. You would simply slide that brass bolt back onto the cast post in the lock body to have a working lock again.

You would then be able to test out the combination that was given to you. Everything else appears to be there and in good shape.

Can you tell me how to take it apart? I need to get the dial off so I can sandblast and paint the door. There looks to be some kind of pin in the tube, but it doesn’t seem to want to turn or pull out.

I think you are talking about the spline key. It should pull straight out but be careful: you don’t want it to break off leaving part of itself unreachable, and you may not be able to find a replacement so don’t bend or mash it. Sometimes they can be very difficult to remove. Once the spline key is out the dial should unscrew from the drive cam. Then you should see some screws holding the dial ring to the front of the door.

You know, the combination can be changed on this lock, but you need a change key to do it. By the way, it is not true that the brass parts need no lubrication. It DOES need to be done carefully and correctly though. Have Fun!
