Trip to Ireland

I’m taking a trip to Ireland,should be in Dublin on the 12-13th. Anyone know of any good antique shops where I might find old foreign padlocks? I’m going to travel the whole country so hope to look for locks all around. Anyone have any good ideas?? Thanks, Mark

I’m no expert but the main concentration of antique shops in Dublin is Francis Street, Dublin 8 (a stroll from Christchurch Cathedral in the city centre). There are some shops which specialise in brass and architectural antiques. They’ll certainly be able to help you there.

Lomo, Thanks for the info, I’ll be sure to head down there for a look around. This is my first trip to Ireland, so I’m hoping to have the time of my life. It’s my wife and my 30th anniversery !!

Well we got home from the trip last night!! We took a tour of the whole island from Dublin clockwise to Cork, Galway, Derry, Belfast and all towns in between ending back in Dublin.What a beautiful country, but we never found any locks for sale,but we did get to see the four big heavy padlocks used to secure the four main town gates of Derry in the museum in the church in Derry.All the Irishmen I talked to told me they never had anything worth enough to lock up, thus the reason for no old locks. Anyway it was a most relaxing and enjoyable trip. The hotels and food and people were 5 star all the way. We made many new friends and enjoyed some of the best live entertainment in the local pubs.
P.S. the Guiness and Murphy Beers were GREAT also!!!!

I recently took a trip to Ireland and explored the lower half of the country. I too couldn’t find a single lock for sale.
The only ones I saw was from The National Museum of Archaelogy (Dublin) and one from St. Mary’s Church (Dingle).

I am sure that customs padlocks would have been plentiful -some must still be around.
A few nice prisons that an accomodating neighbour provided are interesting too.
