Partial Vault

Here’s something very unusual:

The first thing I noticed is that rather than using a ramp from floor level to vault level, a concrete step has been poured. I thought this would also effectively prevent closing the door. Then I noticed there is no door. I can’t remember spotting a vault with frame but no door, at least not quite like this. In a few cases a door has been moved for decoration but here the frame is there; I wonder what happened to the door!

It also appears that the wall to the right was added later on.

I agree about the wall; I’d guess the door was removed to gain clear hall width. Then the wall could move, or move further, to gain marketable footage.

If they removed the door to create space in that part of the building it would be nice to think that they would keep it somewhere else as a historical item of interest and conversation piece. Rather than carting it away for scrap.

However I’m also amused by the idea of them rolling it out on it’s edge, losing control of it and watching helplessly as it careers down a hill… there’s a Laurel and Hardy film in that I’m sure…

Moving the door alone should have some advantages since a circular door is thicker than its frame. It’s getting it horizontal in the field, without the frame that scares me. 🙁think):

Several years before I got in the industry, a circular door was dug out of its basement vault, moved down a narrow hall, up the stairs, out of the building and then pushed over onto sandbags on a low-boy trailer. 🙁clap):
