15th Century Lock Box

Hello, I am a volunteer at the Southampton (New York, USA) Historical Museum and recently, going through their basement, we discovered a 15th century Captains Lock Box - of course, with no key(s). It is solid iron, two lock clasps on the front (which are not locked), but, a lock on top - a keyhole like the old style, that has a pin in the middle. I have been searching the web, calling lock-smiths, etc. with no luck on how to open the box - of course, WITHOUT damaging it in any way.

Does anyone have any idea’s about how to get this open? Would appreciate any idea’s or leads on how to open it (it is 24″ × 36″ × 20″(tall) and weighs about 60 lbs).

Pictures would help a lot.

These are generically known as ‘ Amarda Chests ’ but where made over a very wide timespan and as such may not be as old as you think. With further info I may be able to suggest an expert to open it - however such an opening is likely to be expensive as it may be very time consuming .

Blaine, It’s a German Armada Chest built between 1580 and 1775. My mentor and boss Keith LeVine has one in his collection that is now on display in the Lock Museum of America in Terryville CT since his passing. I remember the day it arrived at our lock shop. The lid contains a very intricate bolt work mechanism and lock. The key hole on the front is a fake. See attached picture.
It’s funny that your location is close to where I summer vacation. My sister has a place in East Hampton NY and I will be down there for some beach time this year.
I’ve continued Keith LeVine’s business and have pursued the Safe and Vault Technician’s trade now for more than 25 years. I have the skills and equipment needed to open your chest without damage.
