MichaelK Hi all, I’ve recently come across my great-grandfather’s safe. However, my research into possible ways to open it has resulted in no answers considering the company which created it, The Damon Safe & Ironwork Co., has been shut down for over 100 years. After the owner George L. Damon passed, the company was absorbed by other ones. Unfortunately, no living relative even had knowledge of the safe, so the combination is out of the question. Does anyone here know of possible ways to open a safe such as this, preferably without having to damage or alter the safe significantly? Even if I’ll have to alter it in order to open it, I’m sure that will be quite a challenge since it is quite a heavy duty safe; It takes two adult to just barely pick it up. Thanks in advance. wylk I think your best path would be to find a safe/vault technician near where you live and discuss it in person (with photos). The basic methods to open a safe are manipulation (time intensive but no damage), or drilling at strategic locations (quicker but restoration becomes the next problem). If the safe can be taken to him (or her) it might save a little money compared to a house call, but if it’s in a basement either leave it there or hire professionals to get it out.
